Yes, there is GNU screen, splitvt, tmux, ...

You can also do this with emacs.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

There's also terminator.
EDIT: Well, if you're running X. I guess that isn't what you were looking for. In which case +1 to GNU Screen.

Emacs can also be used as a front end to a shell(s), debugger (gdb), and a lot of other things. I don't use it, but a lot of colleagues over the years really love it (pry it from their cold, dead hands kind), and I have watched them use it just they way you want many times. I'm not saying that it is for you (somewhat of an acquired taste, what with the meta-commands and such), but it will do what you want. Interestingly, most of the folks that I know that use it all the time are MIT grads or post-grads. You know, the stomping ground of Richard Stallman, creator/maintainer of emacs, father of GNU, the FSF, and the open source movement in general?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
