Unhappy Can't get internet up on ubuntu

I've installed ubuntu 9.04 on C drive of a dual drive Athlon Pc... Xp is on the D drive (and had internet dial up connection via Tiscali)
Now ubuntu loads, and shows the 'D' drine as 'Media disc' and will not load to the internet from it - just shows the file structure of tiscali short cut. I tried to load the Tiscali disc, but it would not operate in Linux... just shows files.
    What do I do now?
Can access the net on this lap-top, but no space here to use for downloads.

Any part-time genius will do... Thanks, Nick.
