madwifi. make install installed modules in wrong place

I am installing madwifi to get wireless on my Thinkpad T40. I unpacked the source, changed into the madwifi directory and then did make and make install. It all went well, but now i've found out that the modules were installed into /lib/modules/2.6.24.5-smp when uname -r shows 2.6.24.5. How could this happen? And is there a way to specify where to install the modules when i issue make install?

by default the modules are installed in a place I suppose definined in the Makefile file. You can change the installation directory by passing some parameter or changing the Makefile manually but that would be really risky!!
Only if I could understand the man pages
