Hi and Welcome !
Which version of RedHat are you trying to install? If its RedHat 9 then I would suggest you not to even try installing it. Its an obsolete distro and doesn't support latest hardware.
Go for Fedora 11 or CentOS. Both are RedHat based and free to download/install.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Even I faced the same problem with Redhat 9. It doesn't install on sata HDD ( only meant for IDE unless some BIOS settings are changed.). Why not use RHEL 5??
Only if I could understand the man pages

RHEL is not free. You have purchase License for security and other updates. CentOS is clone of RHEL only and as I mentioned earlier, its free to download and install.

I haven't purchased RHEL 5 , but am using it for learning . Hence I dont get any updates at all. Is centOS completely like RHEL ?? I used fedora before but found it difficult as I m leaning Red Hat and preparing for the exam.

as they are required by the GPL to release their code, CENTOS uses their exact sources and builds their distro from them, it is exactly the same

Then that means the configuration and there place is also the same??
One thing that differs as I have notices is that the way services are started for exmple
In Red Hat
#service httpd start
is completely different from the way it is started in Ubuntu.
Is the service commnad available in centOS??Only if I could understand the man pages

everything is the same, you wouldn't know the difference if you replaced the centos images with the red hat ones

Hi mallu...
Welcome to the forums.
If you don't have superfast internet connection and/or time to download CDs/DVD consider purchasing them. If you stay in Kerala (going by your name..
) there's a genuine vendor Rainbowcomputech.com: Online Shop for Linux CDs and DVDs.. You get CDs/DVDs for most distros.
If you are preparing for RHCE exam, CentOS is what you need. CentOS is exactly RHCE except for the official branding and support. On the otherhand, if you want a linux distro just to learn then my suggestion would be Mandriva/Ubuntu/Linux Mint.A candle looses nothing by lighting other candles. - Khalil Zibran.
