    Someone Help!!

    Dear Linux Gurus,

I've recently purchased an Acer One from John Lewis - it has a Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.15.E Operating System, and Intel Atom N270 CPU.

I can work Windows like a Dream, but as for Linux - I am a complete Novice. To put it simply, I haven't got a single inch of a clue.

I've spent days trying to get to the bottom of how to install things, how to make things work etc - I've read so many guides etc and have got absolutely no where - so any input would be highly appreciated.

Basically what I want to do, is install and use RoboForm, and upgrade OpenOffice to version 3, thats all!
I've tried making new Directories, Yum, and all sorts of other coding, but still at stage one.

My research tells me that RPM is the best package manager to use to install software - so I downloaded that, and have that in a folder called 'rpm-5.1.9 tar gz - HOW ON EARTH DO I INSTALL IT!!!!!

Secondly, to be able to install exe files, I'll need Wine - I've downloaded wine, and HOW ON EARTH DO I INSTALL IT!!!!!

There are soo many Posts on how to install things on Linux - but all the Jargon just completely confuses the hell out of me. I can see lots of code, but where on earth do you put it!! I know how to open a Terminal, and login as Root, but that's about it.

So, please - I would highly appreciate it if any advice was given on how to install rpm-5.1.9 tar gz. I am a complete novice, so a step by step dummy guide would be perfect!!

Thanks you very much in advance,

    Matthew

PS. Apologies for the spaces in File Names - the Forum thought they were URL'S and wouldn't let me post them.

Hmm, just a little more info and background. Linpus Lite is based on a distribution called Fedora 8. The basic tools for package management, including rpm is already installed and available to you. You don't have to install it. RPM is a little weird because it refers both to a package format as well as as a package management app.

Yum is another advanced package management tool. It has great features like automatic dependency resolution. (Unlike windows, linux programs aren't generally self-contained, but utilize shared libraries and other programs to add functionality. Why reinvent the wheel when you can just call another program that does what you want already, and does it well?)
