Fedora 7 modem issue
Hi new to this forum and site, have what is more than likely a simple fix.
I have a Dell Poweredge 2600 server, also have the Fedora Bible and discs. I believe I have it installed properly, but cannot get it to find my modem. If I load my Puppy Linux Live CD and restart,it has no problems finding the modem. And does so from the RAM only aspect of use...
Thanks up front.

What type of modem is it? Try a newer version like Fedora 11 because Fedora 7 reached its end of life a while back and is no longer supported or being provided with upgrades.

Fedora 7 Modem issue
Thank you for the reply. Modem is external, serial (RS232) and very very generic.
Has no labeled brand name, manufactured in Taiwan. Box claims Linux compatible as well as windows.
As for moving up to 11 have the small problem of being extremely rural, and out side of my dial up providers wireless service range....And the dish variety services available here are way over priced for what I use the internet for.
I am simply boggled by the 7 not finding the modem, yet a Puppy will in RAM mode. Being new to all of this, I was simply under the impression that the protocols used by Puppy were/are the same as the 7's..ie. Modem detection program. No?
I have also tried running another Linux Modem identifier...ScanModem. Again found nothing....did however find a wireless card in a laptop of mine that runs Ubuntu so I know the download works to an extent.
Any clue as to what has been improved on the Puppys modem locator versus the 7's..?
Again my thanks for the reply.

External serial modems usually just work. Have you tried using applications like wvdialconf to check for and configure the modem? There is also an app called kppp which is good for detecting modems and dialling out.

Yes tried wvdialconf...numerous times. And like I said with Puppy running from Ram no problems..7 installed on the HDD zip..nothing.
Shall see if I can find the kppp app and give it a try as well. I even went so far as to enter set up and try various settings for the comm 1..still nothing.
This is also a not set up for any dual boot,HDD was clean from the get go,no other OS on it. Is there any way I can save the puppy "findings" to the HDD and then the 7 would find and use it ????
Again my thanks for the reply
