    system beep on shutdown ?

after installing linux mint 7, I have been getting one beep on shutdown, a google search on this came back as a ram problem...but then i ran across a bunch of posts on ubuntu forums about one beep on shutdown, with an older version of ubuntu, grep does return some paramter errors, but in the mint bug report page those are listed as : benign ignore. it doen't bother me in the least, as long as it isn't a warning of impending hardware failure....any ideas much appreciated.

If you think it is a ram failure warning. You can run mem test from grub menu on bootup. Let it run for about a hour and if no errors, you are cool.

WOE! thanks rok. I went to do that, I havn;t been paying attention when i boot up...this comp never goes to that first grub-loding page where is has the option to test...like my other machine does, this one goes straight to a mint welcome page then the login prompt;;accompanied by a BEEP BONK sound. I guess I need to re-install and test the ram at the very begining

No need to reinstall. I run Mint Fluxbox RC1 on one of my laptops. You should get a quick flash intro during bootup saying press a certain key for detailed grub menu. I am not on my mint laptop right now, so I don't remember the key to press, like F5 or something.

Can't swear to it, but I think you can just type
    memtest
    or
    sudo memtest
in terminal and it will run also from there.

Check out LinuxCommand.org (google it) and see if it is on the list of commands.
Or look through the link in my signature for some command cheat sheets and Linuxcommand.org link

I don't know about Linux Mint, but in Fedora I can get to the grub menu by rapidly pressing the "Esc" key once the BIOS screen is shown until the GRUB menu shows up.
