maybe a dumb question ?
remember last year...all the stories about the board maker that was making boards that would cause errors in linux ? well, what to make of this ?: I have one computer that has mint running flawlessly, and 2 that just have all sorts of problems with mint...but work fine with ubunutu. The newest computer has the most problems of all, won't even run a live session, just gives tons of error meesages, but that disk runs fine in the other comp . what you guys think of this ? thanks.

Maybe it has the TCM (trusted/treacherous computing module) that Microsoft has been pushing for 4 or 5 years.

ahhhhhh Hal.... just remember what they said , back in 2009, " first they came for the newbies and no one cared...then they came for me" any how, seriously, how can the same live cd work in one comp, then not work at all in 2 others, then another cd, work in all 3 ? IM just trying to understand it all.

Unfortunately, some of the newest hardware isn't supported in open source software. If you have hardware that isn't supported, you can usually find some non-free drivers somewhere, but you'll need to know how to manually install it. Ubuntu is based on the unstable (i.e. newest) branch of Debian, and also is less bothered about using non-free software, so that might explain why it works okay on your new machine. I would advise that you just use Ubuntu for a year or two, but then definitely switch to Debian, because by then the stable branch will have caught up with your hardware, and because Debian is a much better choice in the long run (more software, more control, more freedom).

These things are hard to understand. I booted my brothers comp with live Mint, everything worked. Next time I tried it, it wouldn't work. Same cd.

When things work on one computer and not another it's usually due to some problem with the detection of the hardware.
When *the same OS* (specially when it's into a cd, since it's read-only) works in one computer, and then it refuses to boot the next time *on the same computer*, then the issue is almost always faulty hardware, overheating, a broken ram stick, etc. etc. etc. The cd didn't change for sure, unless you scratched it or something.

Yhanks guys for the replies...man I really love these forums, I thnk i learned more in here, than I could have in a classroom, I just noticed I'm coming up on my 2 year anniversery in linuxforums... I love the control I feel i have over my computer--that I never felt with windoes...just last week, when i set up a new modem in windoes, I was interupted every few seconds by some stupid bubble that blocked my screen... and was reminded of why i started all this.
