    mplayer loading...

I used to use linux mint that i burned myself, and i ended up doing another install from a disk out of LF magazine because i thought mine had a bug, well the one that is installed now, is " universal" there is a radio show i listen to every night, and now, when i open it, it takes about 5 minutes for mplayer to load....bunch of numbers scrolling about. it used to just play the radio, I tried installing some codecs, it didn't change it, is there something specific i need to download to get mplayer to just play ? thanks

Try VLC, its superior to mplayer and supports nearly all formats.

That's open for discussion but well, I am not interested in starting an useless war. Both have their problems, and vlc certainly doesn't support more formats than mplayer does.

But yes, try it just in case it works, you never know.

The problem might be that they changed the encoding or the stream. The output of mplayer while opening it might help to diagnose what's going on.

The problem is probably that the "Universal" edition doesn't included any proprietary software, including it seems what is necessary to play mp3s.

    What codecs did you install?

You don't need propietary software to play mp3, there's lame, libmad and several other alternatives. You rarely even need win32codecs, newer versions of mplayer support most of what win32codecs can do.

However some distros disable it because of patent issues with the format, not with the codecs or mplayer itself which are both free and open source.

As said, the best bet would be to look at the output, the rest is just shooting in the dark.

thanks for the replies, just so you understand, it's not mp3's IM trying to play, it's a website for a radio station, that streams a radio show ( coasttocoastam ) when i used mint from the cd I burned, I would just click the radio icon on the web page and it would start within seconds, but with the universal version, it acts like it is loading from scratch every time all over again...taking about a minute, I just went to synaptics and typed " codecs" and installed the multiverse codecs, not sure what else i should specifically install. if any one wants to see the webpage to analize it, send me a private message and I'll give you the link ( I don't want to look like a spammer ). thanks again.
