    how can i get into the grub while i'm using xp?

    The desktop boots without giving me the option which os to boot since the default is windows

    andso i need to edit the grub.

    Windows has a hard time with linux partitions, though I believe there are some programs you can install to allow you to read ext2/3.

    Probably be easier to boot a live linux CD to edit grub. or you might check out Super Grub.

    You can't edit grub.conf file from Windows OS. There are a few software available which enable ext3 read/write access in Windows OS but I won't recommend you to use those.

    Have you tried to press any key at startup? Sometimes GRUB menu doesn't appear at all because of 'hiddenmenu' option.
    Which Linux distro are you using? Try SuperGRUB CD as suggested by reed9.
