    CentOS 5.0 Linux Display Drivers for ATI Radeon X1200 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop

    Hello,

    I m more or less a Linux newbie. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a ATI Radeon X1200 display card, with a total of 3 GB RAM. Can someone please tell me how to install the display drivers on CentOS 5.0.

    I installed CentOS 5.0 but it installed only in text mode.

    Besides, i had also installed Fedora Core 11 which works although everytime i boot up, i have to change the display resolution through Display Settings. it doesn't remember the last configuration i had chosen.

    Many thanks.

    Can you run 'startx'? If this doesn't run then you most likely didn't install the GUI part of CentOS. F11 and Centos are more or les the same OS just one is bleeding edge (F11) and the other is compiled from RH SRPM (Centos).

    Thanks Robert.
    On CentOS, running startx doesn't work.
    I did try installing some drivers downloaded from the AMD ATI site, but the screen goes blank, in fact, there are multiple white running lines, after which i have to do a cold reboot.

    You might have to install x-windows to get the graphics running.
    Might want to run the following;

    Code:
    yuj install kdebase
    To get the KDE desktop installed on your system.
