    Check this sound troubleshooting guide:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

It was written for Ubuntu, but should work with Debian although you will need to make some adjustments such as removing the sudo part of any commands, unless you are using sudo with your system.

Are you sure the sound is not simply muted in alsamixer?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the answer...

I wish it were that simple... The machine I installed on has a built in Soundcard on the MB, and an external card... I suspect I am looking at the wrong output, but don't know how to tell which one Linux is using...

I'd try looking in the BIOS to disable the onboard sound card first, at least then you should know which one Linux is using.
