Handling partitions is very easy and don't think you need any book for that. I would suggest you to check PartedMagic LiveCD and go through its documentation. Its one of the best Partition Manager with Graphical Interface.
If you want to learn command line utilities, check manual of fdisk and cfdisk. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

There are mounds of partitioning articles that can be found online, but they might cause more confusion for you than help. Here's one example:
Linux Partition HOWTO
It goes into much detail, but that might be what you are looking for. If not, some of the shorter blog articles out there might prove to be more helpful, depending on what you are looking for.
That said, I too suggest Parted Magic, as recommended by Casper above if you are simply wanting to get your partitions done so that you can move on and complete your installation attempts.oz

"gparted" which come with most linux live cd's, has a very detailed, easy to understand step by step guide in p.d.f format, you could print it out and have a hard copy on hand...if I can do it...any body can.

Both GParted and PartedMagic uses same tool at backend, parted.
GParted is Gtk based graphical interface of parted and PartedMagic is Qt based. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
