    Hi,

I don't know any good books to recommend in that area. Either the children's books are too general or too Windows specific.

My advise is to look for children's distributions, like Foresight Linux or Edubuntu.

From there you should be able to find appropriate communities.

I suggest you make sure the forums you choose are decently moderated to keep offenders out, like this one
Debian GNU/Linux -- You know you want it.

That person is actually at a huge advantage for getting started with Linux. People who have used Windows before too often expect it to be Windows, but with another name. I'd recommend installing a new user friendly distribution such as Ubuntu or Mint and turning them loose (with any necessary precautions of course) on that machine.

For young children, get the Sugar UI for them to use (now available for systems other than the OLPC laptops) - no documentation necessary...

Regardless of distro, don't forget to install the educational games gcompris.
They'll love them and will learn useful things in the process of playing.

It is available on most distros. In Ubuntu you can install it from Software Center, Synaptic or terminal:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gcompris
