hi
since you are new to Linux, I would recommend you to use Ubuntu. But before you install linux make sure you back up all of your data onto either a separate hard drive or an external media. To start the installation process you need to restart your computer and choose the boot device as CD/DVD.
Linux is different than windows so it would take time to learn and at times can appear difficult. But, once you've learnt the basics you will enjoy working in it.

As gurpreet_bassan already suggested, go for Ubuntu.
First of all, burn .iso file to CD. You can use any CD/Burner package. Do not create data or bootable CD. Select 'Burn Image to Disk' option. I would suggest you to use Imgburn for burning CD/DVD. Its a Windows OS based freeware.
Set CD/DVD drive as First Boot Device in BIOS and boot up from CD. You will have Live desktop of Ubuntu. You can click on install Icon to install Ubuntu in your Harddisk or keep using Live desktop for a while.
Check the link in my signature. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

hello jassppa, it is very importtant that you " boot the cd" not "open it" in windows, when youor computer is starting up, hit "f-12" or what ever ket selects boot in your comp. once you boot up from the live cd. the install just runs straight through, asking questions along the way...it will totally wipe windoes for you. sorry if I mis read this, but when i see the words " open the cd" it makes me think you boot into winows and try to open it there. you'll be surprized how easy the install goes once you start the live cd.

Welcome to the forums!
It sounds like you are not burning the ISO file to disk correctly. Check the following HowTo for all the steps needed to do it properly and have a working installation disk:

i have booted it from the disc and the ubuntu menu comes up and it has about 4 options. i use the keys to get the selector onto install and nothing happens. i then pressed f4 i think it is to get the installation options up and then selected normal. but nothing happens still. so i selected boot from second HD or somthing and then windows started up and i came on here. im so confused. i am sure i have burnt the disc correctly.

If the disk is burned correctly, it could be some kind of hardware issue causing the failure. Many times, the alternate installer (text installer) works for users when the liveCD installer will not. You might try it if you haven't done so already. It works for me every time, whereas the liveCD version does not. Look for it on the Ubuntu Downloads page.
Good luck with it.oz

I have a really silly question...
You did press enter on the install option? If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
