eeepc random freezes when using terminal

    Hello

The last month I got this strange problem. When using the terminal, in random commands (happened with chmod, iwconfig, cat etc) arch freezes and I can only restart with the power button. Also sometimes when I type the first three digits of my routers ip (192) either in firefox or in terminal, gnome restarts and I get back to the login screen. Anyone with an idea on this? using arch 2.6.32 with gnome 2.28.2 on eeepc 1000H

If you're seeing random oddness, you may want to try running memtest86. Leave it to run through all its tests, faulty memory should be replaced.

It sounds like X is crashing, which is usually an issue with the graphics card.

I assume the 1000H uses an Intel graphics chipset, which have been known to be troublesome, though all the Intel problems I had have long since passed away with Arch.

    Post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Is everything up to date? Are you using a custom kernel or the stock kernel? Do you have an xorg.conf file or running without one? Do you experience the problem in other terminal emulators or just gnome-terminal? Have you tried other desktop environments/window managers and does the problem persist? Do you have kernel mode setting enabled?

I have seen similar problems when the pcspkr module is loaded on some laptops, see if that module is loaded and unload it if possible.

    Thank you for your answers
Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I update the system quite often and I am running stock kernel. I am using the xorg.conf.
Also I noticed that my system would freeze not only while using gnome-terminal but also doing almost anything at random times.
Also I don't think I have have kernel mode setting enabled

I just removed the module. Waiting to see if I freeze again

    Thank you for your time

Edit: System freezed again without the module. I got a strange sense that the random freezes might not be so random. For example I always freeze when I start xchat and type /mode valemon +i . Don't know how and why, but it just happens

    BUMP BUMP

I am quite sure that its a system crash not just xserver. I cannot move to consoles (tty1, tty2 etc). Is there a way to reset my gnome?? Or any other ideas?

I just had the same issue with a eeepc 1015b in fedora using lxde desktop-environment. I was also able to get to other ttys but the graphical one froze. I was able to move the mouse-pointer, but that was it. Re-booting from a text-console was no issue... not very elegant, I know.

In SuSe when coming back from a text-console to the graphical one, all the icons look... how to say: distorted - as if the display had really heavy issues. This also happened in lxde.

    So not just Gnome.
