I have downloaded a .tar.gz file to my desktop, and then right-clicked and selected "extract here". Could someone tell me how i can install it please...

Think i'll stick with Windows. For all Windows faults they do make things a lot easier for a new user unlike Linux.

Different computer users find comfort in different operating systems. I personally always find Linux much easier to work with than Windows, but that's the good thing about having options... we can all be happier.

What program are you trying to install? It is unusual that you would want to install it from source. For installing software you would normally start with your package manager which download, installs and keeps your software up-to-date
