Infernal speaker tone at boot
Suddenly I get a consistent very. very loud tone at boot of my PC LInuxOS on a Lenovo 300 N200 laptop. Didn't use to get that. Also it starts smelling burnt but nothing is hot.
What's up?

Sounds like it's failing post. Possibly a hardware error?
Not knowing what bios it has I can't be to specific but... digging through the 17th edition of the bible, it could be a power supply or motherboard failure. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

We need some more information. For example, it sounds as though the computer is passing the POST and has entered the bootloader before the problem occurs. Is this what is happening, or is it making the noise at POST and allowing you to get to the bootloader and allowing you to select the OS you wish to load.

It is passing fine to the bootloader where I select PCLinux OS, then it continues fine until : 'start udev' and after a few seconds waiting there the full loud tone emerges and a burnt smell starts and I have to close the power.
It is a Phoenix BIOS v. 3.05 the latest.
It's the same in safe mode.
i find this: - disable udev from the boot process by running:
chkconfig udev off
but as I have to cut the power to stop the burning smell, I can't get to whatever I do with this.

If it's getting past the post then you may need to simply clean out the computer. If it's very dusty then it could be heating up a component and an alarm may be sounding? and it could also account for the burning smell.
If a clean doesn't sort it out then the fact that you are getting a burning smell still sounds like a hardware issue to meIf we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

I'll try - but why don't I get the tone booting Win 7?
Just cleaned it and it didn't make a difference.
I also let it run a bit longer with the tone and udev was passed and the tone continued and there was a pop and the smell, so I cut the power.
I'll ty booting from a Linux disk and see what happens.
Booting PLOS from disk didn't give the tone.
Could be something from a softwae upgrade. I'll reinstall and see if it disappears.Last edited by heismark; 01-16-2010 at 01:16 PM. Reason: adding

Maybe a driver that's running the hardware too hard or not firing up a fan although I can't find anything on Google

Sounds like I toasted the internal speaker as the sound is there but very vague. The mixer is on max.
Using the headphone and sending the signal to my hifi via the external jack is ok.
But some speaker of the laptop now plays along with the stereo. It used to cutoff the laptop sound. Maybe there are 2 speakers. A system speaker and a conveniuence speaker in stereo.
Also presently the hum in my stereo hifi is gone. That' unusual. So something happened to the sound hardware.
Perhaps the internal speaker could be replaced.
Any idea if an amplifier has been toasted?
