[SOLVED] Install from HDD
Hi. I want to re-install Debian but my laptop's CD/floppy slot is broken. I have downloaded the .iso and extracted the files, but I don't really know how to boot anything but the currently-installed version of Debian.
How can a boot loader be configured to see and boot the installer? Is that even the right approach?
Sorry if I'm being a noob, but I've read various documentation (GRUB etc), but without much background knowledge it isn't too clear where to start.
(WHY: Was trying to upgrade to "testing" by editing some of /etc/apt's files, but that just caused some kind of package conflict which broke GNOME. I vi-ed back to "stable", but I'm still getting various warnings. As I've almost no important data, I though this would be the easiest solution to the two problems.)
Thanks
EDIT: the computer is probably too old to boot from USB

Welcome to the forums!
You can check out unetbootin to see if it will work for you:
UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads
I think it will work without a floppy, cd, or usb drive.oz

There is a way to boot from Iso. I saw it somewhere in the Mepis wiki. If I can find it again. I;ll be back to post the link.
Found it Boot from ISO - MEPIS Documentation Wiki
After thinking about it. Ozars suggestion would be easier and should work for you. Just not sure if it will install or just run live. Never tried it.Last edited by rokytnji; 02-17-2010 at 03:41 AM.
