and here I thought ubuntu was the only distro that requires the 'sudo' command. I could have sworn I just read that OpenSUSE does, too.

As ozar said, some distros come with sudo enabled by default. It is very easy to both enable and disable it. All you need to do is enable the root user by setting a password for it (using sudo passwd root) and then you can either uninstall sudo or just edit the file so that no one but root is inside it.
