    AFAIK, Its not possible to boot up from USB if your machine's BIOS does not support it. BIOS detect devices at start up and GRUB depends on BIOS for Disk Drives detection.

    I am not sure about GRUB2 though. Its much more advanced than GRUB. I will check this in GRUB2 today only.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
