wirless missing in linux, present in win

So, after a very messy start with linux, I seem to have deleted anything network. My network card is still working, I know, because I have a dual boot system and the internet works just fine in win 7. Unfortunately, once I switch to linux (first i had ubuntu, now eeebuntu), the network card is not recognized. It just won't recognize the capability! I am totally new to linux - only been about two weeks (but i am a very quick learner).
    thanks!!

Please tell us exactly what hardware you are doing this on.

    Especially the network controller/chipset.

We will be able to get this fixed if you do.

dumb question - how do i know which network controller/chipset? I'm in win 7 now, since this is the only os that currently gets the internet. sigh.

So, I figured out that the information was in disk manager.

    it is
Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
    and
    Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter
    THANKS!

Check out this wireless startup guide.
Boot into Linux to run the commands listed. You can save the output as a .txt file and copy it over with a USB drive if needed. Post back with the results, and we'll be able to get you going.

Hello. The driver you need is called ath9k. It first made it's appearance in kernel version 2.6.27-rc3, and you are running 2.6.28, so it should be available. However, it is not loading.

Please open a terminal and do
    Code:
    sudo modprobe ath9k
    sudo depmod -a
And then post the output of
    Code:
    dmesg | tail
    iwconfig

Oh, and given that the drivers were newly introduced at the time, installing more recent drivers might help as well.

Assuming you have a wired connection, you can do so with
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty
