Linux version relative to Windows 2003

    Hey,

Ok this is going to sound like a strange question but I hope you can answer it some way.
I have a group assignment coming up and out task is to set up file sharing on a Linux system and a Windows 2003 or 2008.
Now we are using Windows 2003 due to some compatibility issues we are having with our Virtual Machines running server 2008.

Now to provide us with a better comparison we really need to find a Linux version that was released when Windows server 2003 was.

We were thinking of Suse and a Fedora system. Firstly do you think these would act as good test systems for a comparison?

My next and main question is does anyone know what version of Suse and Fedora was released when Server 2003 was out?
I can't really compare a recent version of Linux to Server 2003 due to the features and changes apparent since the versions were released.

If you know the versions that would be awesome, cheers

PS im sorry if this isn't a great place to put this but it's spanning multiple Linux versions so i figured it will keep things "tidy".

Hello and welcome to the forums!

You can find the version history for various distributions over at DistroWatch.com, and I would imagine that wikipedia.com also has the version history for most distributions.

    Hi,

Thanks for the amazingly quick reply!
    Never knew that site existed.
My only issue now is I don't know how to actually search for results. I put in April 2003 as Server 2003 was released April 24th 2003 but I didn't get anything.

Can you give me a quick run down , sorry to be noobish

Sure... looking at Fedora for instance, you'd go to DistroWatch and pull up the Fedora page:

    DistroWatch.com: Fedora

...then moving down toward the bottom of the page, you can see the various version releases along with their release dates.

    Hope that all makes sense.

i would compare it to RHEL since fedora is intended for desktop usage.

RHEL 2.1 and 3.0 were released in 2003.

So the nearest version release to Server 2003 was "Yarrow" in 2003/11/05?

    Good stuff

That was the first official release of Fedora Core, but I'm not sure exactly when Server 2003 was released.

Server 2003 was released off beta April 24th 2003, so I took that as being the nearest release .

    hi coopstah13

Sorry didn't see your reply when I made mine.

We were looking at one point towards red hat so now you have mentioned I will look into swapping and see what results we get.
Our main problem was actually finding the downloads but I notice that site has links so I will check those out.

Thanks so much guys this is all nice research I'm gaining, and im still amazed at the reply speed's
