Which Email Service are you using? Its really easy to configure it for Gmail, Hotmail and other Services. You can find a lot of tutorials over the net.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Have you checked your ISP's website? Most of the better ones have guides that you can use to setup your email client, telling you exactly what goes into each configuration option. If they don't have a guide, they should at least have the information that you would need to properly configure Thunderbird. Otherwise, you can google thunderbird configuration for lots guides, one of which should help you to get it all setup and running.

You might have to get in contact with your ISP Support Center if their email server is not accepting a password that you know for a fact is correct, and it is being entered correctly.

Wrong port or sever type throw wrong password error sometimes. Make sure that you are using correct port and server type.
