The best way to find out, is to try them all......you'll learn a lot in the process and you will know exactly what you want, so dig in and get to installing.

Welcome to the forums!
If it were me, I try them all and in the order you have them above, except that I might reverse numbers 3 and 4, but then either way works out about the same as long as you try all of them.
Hope you'll have fun with it...

And - the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu is in the desktop environment (the look&feel, if you will). Ubuntu uses Gnome, while Kubuntu uses KDE. I actually use both and find both OK - though if push came to shove, I'd probably go with Gnome at the moment.
But as everyone else has said - just try them

I like Fedora, for the most part. Have you looked at Puppy or Slax?
I don't understand the first one. I believe you can run some of the linux GUIs on windows, or are you saying that you want something that can access your microsoft installation? That's straightforward and pretty much all distros can do that.
Playing those files is another thing that is pretty easy and done by all. Why don't you download a couple livecds, and discover your own answers?

If you want something that looks like Windows have a look at Zorin OS. It is Ubuntu based and uses Gnome. I have only just heard of it and have never tried it myself.
At the end of the day you can make any Linux distro look how you want it and VLC movie player should handle those formats.
Try a few and see what you likeIf we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
