    Welcome to the forums!

What Linux distribution and version of the liveCD is it that you are working with?

Most liveCDs boot users into a GUI unless something goes wrong. Are you saying that this one is dropping you into a command line environment?

    Hi,
thanks for replying. I am trying to run linux os 2010 from the cd I have just bought. I have xp on my system so was advised to boot from cd as linux will not run within windows. However, the cd boots up okay and begins to run but then I hit the problem I mentioned. There is a list of actions at the beginning of the cd but it starts to install too quickly for me to read properly ( that doesn't last as it slows down to a painful crawl ) Just puzzled as to what I might be doing wrong as I am sure it IS me. hope you can advise. thank you songbird

It's unlikely the name of the distribution is "Linux OS", it should have a name on it somewhere if you purchased it. You can open a web browser if you still have a functioning windows system and search for "distrowatch" which site will show a list of at least the top 100 Linux distributions. Find whichever you have and post that information.

It is ;possible to install Linux withing windows if you want so you were misinformed.
The list of actions at the beginning are probably use without changing or installing to hard drive, install, boot in safe mode or boot from hard drive. You can stop this by using your keyboard arrows to move down/up so you have time to read the options.

some Linux distribution like Ubuntu, have text only installation versions but, as ozar indicated, they usually boot to GUI. Post any info about the distribution and if you try booting from the CD again, see if there are any error messages immediately above the localhost login.

    Hi,
yes, you are right. I checked and it is called linux xp 2010. I will try to install again and see what happens. Before I went into the setup to change the 1st boot to cd all that happened when I ran the cd was that the files came up onscreen but I could not find any means of actually installing anything. Ah well, here goes again. many thanks. songbird

You need to boot the computer with your installation CD in the drive and the CD drive set to first boot priority. Opening it while you are in windows won't do anything.

I'm not familiar with Linux XP. It is in the top 100 of Linux distributions but not a very popular choice. You could check distrowatch website which has a list of the most popular with links to all which are free downloads. Since you paid for the LinuxXP, you might as well give it a try, you may like it.

Good luck and if you have any specific problems, post back.
