    [SOLVED] Only 2 screen res choices? With requested info

    I only have 2 choices for screen res, 640x480 and 800x600. It appears I have the right driver and it seems to be working though I could be wrong. I did a search and tried what little I could find but it didnt help. Reed9 aske me to post the following info

    Note that the refresh rates given are generic, and should work with most monitors. Ideally, you should look in your monitor's manual or google for your monitor's actual refresh rates. The modes in the display subsection can also be tweaked.

    Would it make a dif if Im using a lcd tv with a computer monitor input? It worked great with windows but Linux is deff not windows!

    As long as you set the right resolution and refresh rate it should be fine.
    I've been using an LCD TV as a second monitor for my linux laptop for years.

    I followed the instructions you gave me and restarted my computer. I got this message:

    Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode
    (EE) Problem parsing the congig file
    (EE) error parsing the config file

    Then I had a few options. I viewd the start up errors and got the following:

    server is already active for display 0, if the server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.xo-lock and start again
    
    (WW)xf86CloseConsole:KDSETMODE failed: bad file discription
    (WW)xf86CloseConsole:VT_GETMODE failed: bad file discription

    Looks like a typo in xorg.conf
    Check that you edited it correctly.

    You can also generate an xorg.conf file with
    Code:
    Xorg -configure
    as root.

    You must not be in runlevel 5 so boot in failsafe mode or get out from runlevel 5 in a terminal with

    init 3
    .

    The new xorg.conf file will be written somewhere in root's home, the exact location will be displayed. Just copy it to /etc/X11/
    It seems also that the module i810 could not be loaded, your distro's manual should point out how to install it from its repos.

    Its a typo in xorg.conf file only. Copy contents correctly from reed9's post, save file and reboot machine.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    coppied and tripple checked to make sure they are the same and still same problem. Is it possible the above has an error. Like Im not sure what it would look like if it were wrong (or right).
