Advantages of Linux over OS X softwares

I have a several year-old Apple computer that has the latest Mac operating system (OS X 10.6.2). I wonder what are the advantages (and disadvantages) of converting my operating system to Linux. Or simply using Linux side-by-side Mac?

I take it that I would be able to use Linux and Mac on a single computer -- is this assumption correct?

I would leave OSX on the Mac. If you want to experiment with / learn Linux with the mac, then you can either install VirtualBox (from Sun/Oracle) or Parallels and run Linux as a guest on the Mac. Once you are comfortable with Linux and decide (if you do) to switch completely, then you can get into the issues you will have to face to install Linux on the Mac, and the loss of some of those really great Mac capabilities that Linux doesn't deal with as well on that hardware.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
