What distribution+version of Linux are you running? Also, which broadband modem and service?

No. PPOE is "Point-to-Point-Over-Ethernet" which would use the ethernet port to get the connection. This is PPP (Point-To-Point Protocol), which is more for getting a TCP/IP connection over a serial link, such as an RS-232 modem or USB broadband modem. The most current systems, such as Ubuntu, will deal wtih these transparently for you. You just need to left-click on the networking icon in the task bar and tell it to use the appropriate device.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
