Still trying to solve this... CD Drive Issue
Hello,
I have a problem with my CD drive, or it's configuration, I have attempted to solve it on my own and failed...
I get a dialog box periodically, (like every few minutes), which says "Can not eject Volume, you are not privileged to eject this device." At the same time, I also get hundreds of the following items in my /var/log/messages file:
Apr 3 06:44:24 strangelove kernel: [43318.463099] hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Apr 3 06:44:24 strangelove kernel: [43318.463103] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
If I remove the data connector from the back of my CD drive all is well, and I never see the message via the dialog box, nor get the hundreds of log entries in /var/log/messages... However I also don't have a CD drive...
Is this failed hardware, or a configuration issue on my part? New install of Debian/Gnome, new user to Linux as well.
Any help would be appreciated...

One more thing I just discovered...
If I leave the Data Cable on the CD, but remove power from the CD, I still get these errors...

Seems that this repeate error message was something left over... Upon reboot the message went away if the CD was disconnected... Still need to find out what is happening...

Howdy Dave.
I don't know If I will be able to help here. Just to let you know. You haven't mentioned what distro you are using. What kind of program like Braserio, K3b, Nautilus, whatever the cdrom drive is not working in. Computer specs etc....
So I don't think you will get many replies on what you have submitted so far. Good Luck with it and Happy Trails, RokLinux Registered User # 475019

Hi,
I have changed the hardware, and I get exactly the same thing... Does anyone have any suggestions?
One of the tests I ran was to remove the CD drive for a few weeks... All problems went away...

It almost sounds like there is a problem wtih your USB port, especially given you say that powering off the CD drive but leaving the USB cable attached continues with these symptoms. Does your system vendor/manufacturer has a diagnostic program you can run to check the system hardware? HP does for their systems, as does Intel for their motherboards, as does Dell, et al.

Is the drive a master or slave ide device? Are you sure you have the jumpers properly configured?
