BackTrack is a linux distribution. If you want to run it from Windows, you would need to run it as a virtual machine.

That said, many of the tools included in BackTrack have binaries for Windows (such as the metasploit framework, netcat, nmap, rainbow tables, etc).

You generally don't run it on a Linux operating system...nor a Windows operating system. It IS a Linux operating system.

Generally, you boot into it as a LiveCD, not try to run it in a virtual machine (which is how it would be done on Windows or from inside another Linux install).

As long as your hardware can handle it, it doesn't matter what is already installed. When you set your BIOS to boot from CD first, it boots your liveCD instead of your hard drive, where Windows (or whatever) is installed.

It is not a matter of platform independence. It is a matter of what the BIOS looks for to boot the OS. If it is included on your CD, it boots from there. Otherwise, it can boot from the HDD or wherever you specify.
