The title explains it all .. When I do a ls -al, all of the file attributes are "?". I tried deleting... says no file .. tried chown and chmod ...

    "?" show up when doing ls -al

    The title explains it all .. When I do a ls -al, all of the file attributes are "?". I tried deleting... says no file .. tried chown and chmod .. no dice ... I use cygwin ..so I even tried deleting it within Windows ..fail!!
    Any suggestions.!?!?

    I take it, the files had the usual attributes, and the ? showed up after a certain point in time?
    Then the disc is most likely dying.
    - Backup what you can,
    - *after that* test the disc with badblocks (there is a write mode, that will erase the whole disc)
    - if that reveals any errors, replace the disc
    You must always face the curtain with a bow.
