Most distros have vim installed, with vi pointing directly to it.
Should this be the case for you, you can run vimtutor to get some coaching.Jay

Yeah, back when I first started using vim it made me really happy when I happened across vimtutor. It wasn't a comprehensive lesson by any means, but it was enough to get a feel for the app and make me want to learn more. Somewhere along the way I stopped using vim and switched to vi, but both are great text editors.

Oddly... I tried vi, couldn't get a feel for it.

But then again, since the vim keystrokes are the main controls for NetHack, I might be a little biased
