Without knowing your computer specifications that will be hard to do. i386 32 bit is usually a good starting choice as those isos usually work on all equipment. Some isos require more ram than others. For a novice any of the top ten at Distrowatch should suffice. Running as a live cd will tell you what you may prefer to run also.

Linux distro files to be downloaded

Ubuntu and/or openSUSE will probably do you best. Go to Distrowatch to find CD/DVD image download links, or google the distro names for the home sites. I don't know what's on the Distrowatch top ten these days, but I'll bet Ubuntu is #1, and with reason.

The suggestion to get a LiveCD is the best advice you'll get, no doubt about it. Get 3 or 4 from different distros. I like Ubuntu and openSUSE best for new folks, followed by Fedora and Mandriva. The thing about the live CD is, if it runs on your machine, you can get the install to run, too. The install may NOT run as smoothly as the Live CD. This is a frequent complaint. But, for documentation on how to get things working when that happens, I've been happiest with the two distros I listed as first to check.

I use Ubuntu for my server, and openSUSE for my desktop.

If you have 4GB or more of RAM, I'd recommend going with the 64-bit version of whatever distribution you decide on. Any of the top 5 distributions in the Page Hits Ranking chart over at DistroWatch.com should be good for starters. You could start at the top and work your way down the list until you find the distro that best fits with your own personal tastes and computer hardware.

The main thing is to have fun with it!
