Hello and welcome!

Be sure you have your sources.list file setup properly before trying to install packages, and be sure to run the update command before trying to install anything.
You can check this apt-get howto for some info on using apt:
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/apt-get.html
...it was written for 8.04 but still applies.oz

I tried running the update command and it starts and says connecting stays on 0% and then it will shoot a list saying everything failed. Nothing will work

You probably need to try some different mirrors if your current mirrors aren't working properly.

Is internet connection working fine in your machine? Is it behind proxy?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
