    Please Recommend Me A Distro

I have just recently been looking into Linux, and I was thinking about installing it on my computer (specs below). I need all mf my hardware to be supported. This is my first time using linux. There are just so many distros out there, I just can't decide which. I've heard good things about fedora, debian, and gentoo. Also, What window manager would you recommend (KDE, GNOME, etc.)?

    CPU: i7 930
    Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
    Memory: 6GB 1333MHz
    Graphics Card: XFX 5850
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB

    Thanks

    Hi & Welcome Jtvd78!

I suggest you try to use different distros to start with and play around with it for a while. You can make new threads to ask for help when facing issues.

I'm sure that you would be able to make your choice after personally experiencing each one.

    Gnome or KDE? Same suggestion.

    Enjoy the hunt!

Try this distro test, it's fairly good at helping you decide what to try first.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Pretty much any distro should run fine on that hardware. The distro quizz presented to you above by MikeTbob works well for helping new users choose a distro or two to start off with. As for Gnome or KDE, you should use the one that you decide you like best after you've tried them. You can setup both on the same system if you wish, but I've never liked doing that myself although there are those that do it all the time. KDE4 is still somewhat bug ridden because they totally restructured it a few years back, but lots of users don't let that bother them. Gnome is looking like it's about 8 years old now, but I don't let that bother me because it works great. You might decide you like neither of them and instead go for Xfce4, or LXDE. You might also decide you like neither of them and instead go for a window manager only type setup.

The main thing is to jump right in and enjoy the experience of testing all the options that are open to you, then making up your own mind about what you like.

    Have fun with it!

Did you by chance download the 64-bit ISO for Linux Mint instead of the 32-bit one?

...And that's why you're getting that error message.

That's interesting because the Intel i7 930 is definitely a 64-bit capable processor. It's a fairly new CPU on the market being released recently so make sure your system BIOS is detecting it properly. If it's not, you might need to perform a BIOS upgrade.

You also get that error if the host operating system on which you're running VirtualBox is 32-bit. You can't run a 64-bit guest OS on a 32-bit host, if I'm not mistaken.
