    [SOLVED] In need of Direction

My questions could go under four different headings, so I'll post here(moderators relocate as necessary, plz).

My short term goal is to get a (local only) dedicated game server up and running(in order to get wife off of my back.

In the past we rented a server from a host. That server was administered via PuTTY, CuteFTP, and Total Commander, all over SSH.

How much if any of those things are required for a local server?

Currently, my lucid box is stable and has a static IP. The machines can see each other the Network, But are in different workgroups. would the game pick up the server and utilize it without directly being able share files and such?

how does one alter the workgroup? How do domains work and what would it take to get to all the windows machines on the same one?

Any assistance you are willing to offer would be greatly appreciated.

If the reason for this is money, don't forget that the power bill may top the monthly fee for a rented server if run 24/7.

This depends on how you wish to interact with your server.
You can type in commands on the keyboard physically attached to the server while sitting in front of it.
Or you can keep using SSH (Putty) if you wish to give orders over the network cable. (E.g. your server is in the basement, but you are in the bedroom with a laptop.)

Similar for FTP. You can put the CD-ROM or USB stick into the computer in order to transfer files. Or you use FTP if you want to do it over network.

I am not sure what you mean by "workgroup". But as long as the gamer's machines (clients) can reach and connect to the server, everything should be fine.

That was just the sort of information I was needing. No, it is not about saving money though that is always a bonus. I relocated to an area where the only reasonable source of Internet is satellite based. with a whopping 200Mb/day of bandwidth, my wife has been relegated to playing local games. However, one more unit on my network won't do $80/month in damage to my electric bill.
thank you for taking your time to help me out on this matter. I don't suppose by any chance you know what the default su password is for ubuntu?(10.04)
