    thanks ksinkar.

    Sorry for taking so long to try your suggestion, I had to work on regular admin stuff at work.
    But now I am back on this issue.

    Your suggestion does not go very far on my desktop,
    here is the results
    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    [root@PomLinux home]# fdisk -l

    Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250000000000 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30394 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 10199 81923436 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda2 10200 10212 104422+ 83 Linux
    /dev/sda3 10213 30394 162111915 8e Linux LVM

    Disk /dev/sdb: 800.1 GB, 800166076416 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 97281 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

    Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sdb1 * 1 64 512000 83 Linux
    Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
    /dev/sdb2 64 97282 780898304 8e Linux LVM
    [root@PomLinux home]# lvscan
    Locking type 1 initialisation failed.
    [root@PomLinux home]# pvscan
    Locking type 1 initialisation failed.
    //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

    I do not know why I can not issue the command.
    However, I did check my home directory and here it is

    rwx------ 63 Pom Pom 20480 Jul 5 08:27 Pom

    Can someone tell me what number 63 represent?

    thanks for your time.

    Although it said that my home dir is read and write by Pom but I can not edit any files in my home dir, it says that read-only file system.

    I should add that I no longer have Ubuntu installed.

    the disk HDD is fedora core 2 and the other is fedora core 13.

    the problem I have is with the first HDD (core 2). I want to fix the read only problem on this core 2 before I mount the LVM volume per yor suggestion.

    I will check into module dm-mod.

    thanks
