    of course, but it depends on how little memory you have

    there are many tiny distros, such as puppy linux, tiny core linux, etc

    I don't know what you call "low memory". I have a desktop pc with 256MB and it runs Debian with an LXDE desktop environment and Crux with the Openbox window manager, both at a reasonable speed.

    even on 128 memory, you could run ubuntu, you would have to do a base install using the server edition, then add things you want on top

    you couldn't run gnome or kde, but might be able to get away with xfce, most likely not, you will need to run one of the *box WM's or something similar, I like fvwm-crystal on resource light boxes

    also, forget about firefox, go with sea monkey

    I have an old Tosheba Portege P3 500, and it runs Puppy 5.0 or DSL just fine. I tried Lubuntu, and it ran fine from disk, but with only a 6 GB HD, it didn't have room to install.
