    Internet and panel bar issues

Quite sorry for the vague title, but I seem to have two distinct issues with Ubuntu, and I'm not sure they are related.

I work on a recent Dell Studio Intel core 2 duo laptop dualboot Vista - Ubuntu (installed within Vista). My issues:

    - No internet connection whatsoever. On the panel bar there is no icon for internet or which networks are available so it's pretty much guess work. I ran the diagnostic and got a confirmation it cannot connect to the internet, but nothing more specific, as without the icon I can't tell if it's even picking up my network or not.

    - The panel bar misses a huge chunk - after logging in there should be this part with the username and switching off/logging off options. This is completely missing.

    - A program I installed, Desktop Drapes, will fire up but not show any icon in the panel bar while it is running.

    - Also, other icons on the panel bar have gone missing without a trace without me being able to tell how or why.

What happens when you try and add the missing icons to the panel (right click on panel ->add to panel)?

With regards to the internet, what do you get if you run ifconfig (in the terminal)?

The internet icon wasn't in the list at all as far as I could tell.

I'll post the ifconfig tomorrow when I start up in ubuntu.

Right, so I checked the panelbar's add menu, definitely couldn't find anything that seemed to have to do with the internet. As for the ifconfig:

    lo Link encap:Local Loopback

    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

    TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

    RX bytes:720 (720.0 B) TX bytes:720 (720.0 B)

Well it won't be (I guess the network manager icon) specifically. What about something like "notification area"?
Are you trying to get online through a router (or lan) or through a modem or on wireless? It's pretty simple to do it without the icon if its first one, but you should probably try and get the icon back first

Wifi, non-secured, but yeah, with my broadcom I've got issues enough.

Broadcom cards generally require the installation of non-free firmware or need Broadcom's non-free driver, neither of which Ubuntu can ship due to licensing issues.

If you have a wired connection, there should be an option to install restricted hardware drivers that will get you what you need.

If the hardware driver installer doesn't work, post the output of
    Code:
    lshw -C network
And we can tell you which you need.

I have those drivers - I installed them, they run fine but then one day I fired up and the internet didn't work. Could it be the drivers are out of date?

If you installed them via the hardware driver manager or normal package manager, then no, they should fine. For the wl driver in particular, if you change the kernel, you need to recompile against the new kernel, but again, the Ubuntu devs take care of that and would update the package in the repositories.

Post the output of the command I posted above as well as
    Code:
    lsmod
    dmesg
dmesg will be very long. Please place it in code tags. You might also want to redirect it to a text file for easier management.
    Code:
    dmesg > dmesg.txt
will create the file dmesg.txt in the current working directory.
