    Running Puppy Linux

I really like the look and feel of Puppy Linux 5.1 but i am still looking around for up-to-date tutorials. For instance how do i download and install new software that is not included in 'quickpet'?

This is rediculous! Whenever i find a tutorial it is out of date. Just seem to be going round in circles and getting nowhere. Very poor Puppy Linux community who seem reluctant to help. Shall stick with the distro for a couple of days more then i'll ditch it if i still can't make no progress. Pity as i really like the distro

I'm not sure what tutorials and articles you've checked, but take a look at the Puppy Wiki if you haven't done so already. This software wiki page for Puppy was updated last just 3 days ago:

I hope I catch you before you jump out the Puppy window.

There are currently several Puppy Linux distros being developed or updated. I get your confusion.

There are older Puppies in the 4.x range
There are "puplets" distros custom made by fans of Puppy looking to put their own "twist" on it

    There is a Quirky
    There is Woof

There are Puppy 5.x distros based on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx called Lupu

Each Puppy sometimes has a separate repository (software download server) for their
    packages (software applications)

Figure out which one you downloaded. Go to Google and search it's repository.

Need more help? Post again. I'll see what I can do to keep your frustration from turning away from a very cool little Linux distro.

    Hi canineloop

I was hoping to learn how i might edit the /etc/hosts file in Puppy Linux 5.1 and stop ads and undesirable sites. Are there lists out there that i could copy?

Thanks for the previous replies to both ozar and canineloop

Changing etc/hosts to prevent browser jacking

    Hello, branoo.

Puppy like other distros keeps its hosts/hosts.allow/hosts.deny files in the /etc directory.

I'm not guru enough to tell you how to alter these files to prevent browser-jacking. I think it might be easier to use squid and squid-guard as a preventive rather than risk "breaking" your Puppy install.

If you do a backup of your install, you can experiment with changes as much as you'd like. To fix a bad change, just boot from the live CD and replace the goofed file with the backed up original.

And there are undoubtedly discussions about it in the Puppy Forums. Not to
mention the friendlies there who'd help you do what you want with it.
