I use 'sudo pppoeconf' to setup my DSL connection. Then use 'sudo pon dsl-provider' to connect and 'sudo poff dsl-provider' to disconnect.

Use 'ifconfig' to check status of connection.

    what distro are you using?

if you are running gnome, network manager has a gui to do this, you have to right click network manager icon and click edit connections, then go to DSL and add a new connection where it will ask for username and password and such
