GNU/Linux is an operating system - just like winXP. This means that you cannot just install linux like any other app.
However, you can install Ubuntu and get it to dualboot *via* windows using an ubuntu livecd (using wubi):
Download | Ubuntu
Then write this image to a CD and insert it into the CD-ROM. You can then install linux as any other app. Once done, reboot and choose Ubuntu Linux in the boot-menu
Good luck, and welcome as linux-user!

Hello and welcome to the forums!
UNetbootin also offers a Linux installer that runs from within Windows (or Linux):
UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads
It's worked really well for me those times that I've used it.oz

BEFORE you install via wubi ... DEFRAG your drives.
Hopefully you will have more than just the C:\ partition.. If so then install to the other partition.
Enjoy

I would recommend doing some research on Distrowatch and then trying a few Live CDs. As far as just having a Linux distro to play with and learn without affecting your Windows installation, Puppy Linux is hard to beat. I cut my teeth on it a few years ago and still keep a copy around.
