    Bare minimum crash proof distribution

    Hello,
I have a very powerful I7 Intel processor. On this computer I want to simply run an instance of Apache Tomcat (dedicated server) running a java application with a bunch of things like mail server, servlet container, jasper, etc. Some versions of linux have too many features that I do not need. I do not want the clutter of features I will never use. What is the bare bone version of linux distrib? would that be debian?

These two distributions seem to be popular elsewhere on the internet:
    CentOS 5 (64-bit)
Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron (64 bit)

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'm not so sure that a "crash proof" distribution (or operating system) exists, but the base install of Debian along with whatever else you want to add to it should work fine. We also have a poll showing member recommended server distros that you can check out:

Best of luck to you with your project.

You could have a look at this distro (Zentyal). It's based on Ubuntu, but there is no bloat, just everything for a server is aboard.
