Vi/vim error ^z
Dear Linux user,
I'm using putty 0.60 (on Windows Vista) to connect by ssh protocol to other Linux computer.
I have a problem with VI/VIM. When I key button "n" or "b", it returns me n^Z or b^Z.
What could the problem be?!
Thanx a lot,
Maria Elena

use "nano" its a much better program than "vi". Should be installed be default.
Just type "nano filename.txt" etc or whatever file you want to edit. press CTRL+O to save and CTRL-X to exit .
It can also be used to create files.

Forgot to say this is over putty too!
Vi is a great editor if you know what you're doing!

I guess it's ok if you run Linux at home, but I don't think nano comes with Linux. I know it doesn't with RHEL.
If you are supporting some Linux system, they most likely will not
allow you to install anything!
Vi comes native with most linux releases.
So...better to learn Vi!!

Im sorry I have to disagree, i use it as standard to manage 3 VPS's with over 50 websites on.
VI is old and outdated.
Nano IS on 90% of Linux installs by default.
It is not on RHEL5 because RHEL take ages and ages to adopt newer programs.
I hate RHEL with a passion. CentOS and Fedora > RHEL.

Sorry about that. I didn't know nano came on other Linux versions.
I've been using Vi since 1987 and will continue using it. Although I am not
an IT support guy, I do security and Vi suits me fine. I have used Vi to write a 1,000+ line program in the past. Worked great. I guess if I did programming for a living I'd probably used something else to edit.
To each his own.
Regards,
Ray

This is definitely not the place for a nano vs. vi debate.
mesana, it sounds like you're on Windows. It sounds to me that something in your keyboard configuration is messed up, or some incompatibility between whatever version of vi you're running with your setup. I would check some Windows forums, or the official Vim website for more information to see about getting Vim to work with your setup.
