Best version for an ancient computer
Hi All!
I need a version of linux that can run a 366 Megahertz Celeron with 128mb of ram, it doesn't have internet and windows 2000 won't recognize my wireless card, even with drivers (Don't work with older than XP...), so I have to use a flash drive to carry iso's to it. The CD drive is shot and it has no USB/Network Boot feature on it, or else I would have used my pocket Slax AGES ago. (so it has to have a Wubi/UNetbootin type installer that runs inside of windows...
I know that this is a tall order, but please try...

SliTaz
Look up SliTaz. It should work. But then, how much software do you need? What requirements do you have? Word processing?
If you need more, check Distrowatch. It has all the info on Linux distros.

Not sure but Ubuntu 4.0 may possibly work. I installed many versions of Ubuntu and tryed LinuxMint 7. Ended at Ubuntu 4.04 that finaly worked on the system.

First things first...I think he's got the distro he wants...he can worry about other distros later...he doesn't have a working cd-rom drive or usb/network boot support he's got two options that I can think of...
Get a new cd-rom...maybe your broke idk...
Or...
get an hd caddy that'll fit right...10 or less bucks on ebay...or borrow one...
use another computer to copy the OS install files of you choice...(knoppix, ConnochaetOS 0.9...are my favs) to your laptop's hd ...
Maybe there's some way to attatch a floppy to boot from or give the hd a boot partition with a boot loader (grub or lilo...I like grub)...and install the files that wayLast edited by nguill00; 01-30-2011 at 04:14 AM.

Dsl or any other distro needs a medium in which to transfer the files...his computer lacks just that ability...his problem's not which distro he should use...it's how to go about installing (any distro) that doesn't have a cdrom, usb, or network boot option...

Copy the (small) Linux installer on a hard disk and run it from your previous operating system.

There appears to be no way your system can boot.
Anyway, I would prefer a Debian with lxde installed from an online system and them migrated to this offline system.
If you want best possible performance replace Debian with Gentoo after noting down the native CFLAGS of this system and extreme USE tweaking but with a generic kernel.
