    Failed install

    Was watching my mate running a live cd "Linux" and then attempt to install it to the hard drive. But the install failed and the following appeared on the screen:

    (process: 335): GLib-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (o)

    Could someone tell me what the above means and if there is a solution please.

    Thanks

    Which distro is this coming from?

    There was a bug in a Ubuntu 10.04 development release that gave this warning, but it should be harmless. Probably something else is causing the installation failure.

    Hi reed9

    My mate was attempting to run Ubuntu 10.10 "Live CD" and then install to the hard drive when the install failure message appeared. The computer in question has 1.5GB RAM and an 160GB Hard Drive.

    He had previously attempted to install PCLinux-Phoenix-xfce-2010.12 and that failed as well due to the partitions not being mounted, i think?

    If the live CD is failing, I would try Ubuntu's alternate installer.

    Personally I would burn another CD. I've never had an Ubuntu (or derivative) install totally fail unless the CD was bad. I've installed it on a lot of machines that I prep for a charity that gives out computers to underprivileged kids.

    There is an option when you boot the CD to check it for integrity.
    "Check disc for defects"
    You could try that.
