    Video driver problems? Not sure.

    I installed Debian recently, and everything seems to be working fine, except some video games are unusually slow compared to what they would normally be. Tremulous, for example, worked reasonably fine on this computer with Windows XP, but now (Debian) for some reason it's laggy even on the title screen.
    Something wrong with my video drivers?

    All of the information I know:
    The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000
    RAM: 256mb? Gnome System Monitor says 247.1mb, SWAP: about 730mb
    Processor: Intel Celeron 2.40GHz
    HD: 25gb out of a 40gb HD free, and an external 1tb HD with about 920gb free
    Debian Release 6.0 (squeeze)
    Kernel Linux 2.6.32-5-686
    GNOME 2.30.2 (I've tried LXDE also, no noticeable change)
    Only linux on the machine.

    Patience! It's a weekend and people are out doing other "stuff"...

    How are you running your Windows games on Debian? Via Wine?

    One thing to bear in mind is that Debian 6 (Squeeze) ONLY provides fully open source software, including video drivers, so proprietary drivers and/or firmware blobs are not supported/provided. This means that you are likely running without the full capabilities of the video hardware.
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

    Sorry about that.
    No Wine, just regular Debian. intellinuxgraphics.org seems to be where I'd find the right drivers, if they're not in Debian's packages repository, but it seems like they might already be. There are a few things in there labelled "intel", but I'm not entirely sure how to correctly install or configure them if they're not in there.

    Just trying to understand the precise situation. So, you are running a native Linux version of the software? How did you get it, in binary format, or source code? Also, since you say the system is running a Celeron CPU I have to assume it is a 32-bit version of Squeeze that you are running.

    Yes, in one case installed with Synaptic from the normal package repository (or whatever it's called, not sure if using the right word here but you probably know what I mean), even, and yes, 32bit, I think.

    Well, actually the new version of the X11 server, Xorg, doesn't need to use an xorg.conf file any longer as it will interrogate the hardware on startup and decide which of the installed drivers it should use. Also, in the one you showed, in the "Device" section there is no "Identifier", "Driver", or "BusID" entries, which would identify the card, driver it should use, and what the PCI bus ID would be, "PCI:0:2:0" in your case. I'm not sure which would be the proper/best driver for this chip set.

    In the Synaptic package manager you found a bunch of Intel video drivers. See if one of them mentions your chip set. Also, remember that Google is your friend! You can also search on the Intel web site. They generally have a lot of Linux driver information and may have an updated driver for you to download and install. Since I use a lot of Intel hardware, it has been very useful for me in the past.

    I've installed everything I could find with Synaptic that had Intel in the name, to no avail. Google might have helped if I could do anything with xorg.conf. It would really help if I knew what my problem was.
