    [SOLVED] Ubuntu, reboots while installing

I've been trying to get Ubuntu on my computer for months now and after having googled no relevant cases which may help me I would like some help.

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my computer (which already has windows and I don't want to lose it yet)

I have already burnt 3 CDs yet the problem is the same each time, that's why I believe the problem does not come from the burning. I checked the md5sum and there was no problem.

However when I try to install Ubuntu (or sometimes during a live session) after partitionning my computer and selecting mounting points, having "format" checked on the concerned partitions, the installation goes halfway through the "copying files" process and my computer simply reboots.
More precisely, in the middle of installation the screen is replaced with the loading page of Ubuntu (like when you start with the live CD) then my computer reboots, no questions asked (not even to remove the CD, it reboots with the CD in it... while during a manual shutdown it would open the tray and ask you to close it)

So, I've tried to use the alternative installer, but it still isn't working.

First time I tried, it rebooted like with the previous installations.
Second and third times, it seemed to freeze at "updating the list of available packages" at 73% of something.... Is it normal for it to take at least 30 minutes to do ?

Can't help you -- get separate drive, at least.

Do you mean that I shouldn't use partitionning to have both Ubuntu and Windows on the same hard disk ?

Why don't you try installing Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04) instead. It is a Long Term Support release and I'm running it because the latest release didn't install on my computer either

I agree with anchorschmidt, use 10.04 if you have problems with 10.10. You might also try Mint. You don't say what the specs are of your machine, but if you have less than 1 GB ram, that can stall things out.

I, too had issues with Ubuntu 10.10 & Mint 10, so I reinstalled Mint 9, which by chance has LTS. My main issue was the screen was not as readable as the previous version was. Too, I had issues with the disc popping out. Also, after Ubuntu 10.10 was installed, when I tried to reinstall the XP Media Center edition, it took 4 attempts to format the drive, it stopped midway in the process (BSOD).

Since Ubuntu 10.04 & Mint 9 are LTS distros, you can't go wrong by keeping them.

Thank you for your answers, I managed to install Ubuntu 10.04 instead of 10.10
