People keep saying that some day there will
be viruses that affect Linux. I'm still waiting.
If you use your computer like most home users,
you face no threat from viruses. If you run a server
there are many threats, but not viruses, strictly speaking.

People who run networks that include Windows machines usually use ClamAV as an antivirus. Linux has no wild viruses but it can act as a virus carrier.

A server is potentially vulnerable due to the nature of
its work. You should research the type of services you
intend to offer, and use the software that seems least
likely to be defeated by an attacker. Configuration is
very important to security. Also ideally, a server should not
have unneeded software installed that could potentially
aid an attacker.

Hello and welcome!Does Linux(Debian 6.0.0 ) Require an Antivirus?
I don't think any of the Linux distros actually "require" an antivirus application but some users prefer to run one and perhaps other security apps for various reasons. You can read this short article regarding Linux security to help you with deciding which security apps you might want to run, depending on your own needs and the purpose for your machine.
You can find some security apps listed for your consideration here:
Security | Linux App Finder
Keep in mind that it's generally better to install them with the default package tool for your distribution rather than installing from source unless you have good reason for doing otherwise.Last edited by oz; 02-18-2011 at 11:04 PM.
